This is something that occurred to me the other day also.

I don't see any reason why not, as long as one made of acrylic or
similar was acceptable.

I know that commercial ones are laser cut aluminium sheet, 
but I imagine that something like 1mm acrylic sheet would work just as
well for short run boards.
