Subject: [Swansea Hackspace] Urgent! - Briefing for Swansea Model Railway
	Show.

Hi all, I?ve just come back from the initial setup at the National Waterfront Museum. I have managed to get us a great spot!

So I will be arriving at the Techhub tomorrow morning at 8 to pick things up and making my way over to the NWM at around 9.
I will need some help carrying over some of the things including a monitor and table as I found the table provided for us was far to small.

The show will be open to the public between 11 and 4 both days and we will need to be out by 6 on Sunday.

Parking will be available at LC2, it is ?7 and ?3.50 will be refunded to the museum if you bring your parking respite. Parking is free on Sunday.

Any questions please don?t hesitate to ask, I will try my best to answer.

We would really appreciate some volunteers to help with the stall, you
dont need to do much, mostly be there to answer questions and hand out

Skill sharing workshop about the various types of boards and chips that
are available to transfer your arduino project to, that are small and

A tutorial on Linux command line basics, how to install software, how to
navigate the filesystem, how permissions work, using the help system,
manipulating files, working with images, and other simple but useful
tips and tricks.

Please bring your own laptop for this session, if you do not have a
linux install (e.g. Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian/Raspbian) already please
bring an empty usb key that we can install a 'live' system on for you to
experiment with.

Thats probably about it for December, it tends to be a pretty busy month
for most with other commitments and socialising, so we shall start the
workshops again in january.

Just walked passed the SUCS room at the uni after a blood test, saw these signage stands in the refuse area, presumably being thrown.

Something like this would be really handy when doing external events, like at the waterfront.

If needed maybe a member in the u I could arrange having them.

Could it be worth speaking to the carers centre about laying on some custom craft sessions for carers?

As they are looking into funding there could be the possibility of acquiring some materials/equipment or payment by doing something with/for them.

Many many Thanks to Sharon, Justin (and children too) for running the EL
wire  workshop at our Hackspace yesterday - Tom's tie was a close second to

Learned a lot about the EL wire, shapes, sizes, the fact is comes in panels
too and can be cut and re-connected. The sewing is not my fort? although
the skills being demonstrated in the group with the use of 'mono-filament'
was impressive.

Hi All,
It was *really great to get down to the space* this weekend and attend an
event and see new faces that haven't been before (and get choc biccies too).

The bigger space is REALLY fantastic and it's looking like a really great
makerspace now with all the storage and different stations setup for 3D
Printing, Soldering, Sewing and textiles and the laser cutter / CNC room.

It's also FAB to see a rich list of events in the calendar
<http://swansea.hackspace.org.uk/Meetings/Next>for everyone to enjoy too
(don't forget RAGWORM night tomorrow ?)

*BUT.....(you knew there would be one).*

To keep the bigger space we need to increase members and income to the
space (any ideas?).

*Did you say you would run an event?*
Is anyone else able to commit to run an event (instead of it ALWAYS being
Justin) please? Justin is proposing a 'Build your own Robot' series of
classes early next year - what else could we do?

It would be good to *capitalise on the Christmas spirit* to entice new
members and also tap into the '*New Year's Resolution*' to incentivise
people to pick up new skills - and where better than our Hackspace!! :-)

*DON'T BE SHY - Any ideas or suggestions on how we can attract more members
and promote our HACKSPACE then please reply here... Many thanks in advance.*

Tonight is going to be busy, we have ragworm visiting, soldering
workshop, cake, etc etc. so there will be plenty of people around.

The vinyl cutter and its own little terminal now have a home and are
"functional" - minus a power button for the computer! I'll be adding that
in the next week or so.

Anyway, could do with some help to 3D print a few different size collets
for holding pens and pencils. I'll be around Saturday for the workshop and
on Mon evening.

Just a reminder that the Coastal Housing Fun Day will be happening next week Tuesday. Some of you have been making musical things on the 3D printer, and I don?t know if anyone had a go at experimenting with the Makey Makey yet?

So far I?m not aware of anyone who will be helping out, apart from Eleri Powell from TechHub who offered to help at the stall. This is really a good opportunity for marketing the hackspace, so if you can help out, please let me know as soon as possible!

Yesterday Eleri from TechHub and I represented Swansea Hackspace at the Coastal Housing Tenant Fun Day at LC2:

There was a lot of interest, from little kids being amazed by the 3D printer to members of the public (and Coastal employees) getting excited about the possibilities of a hackspace. There was a photographer too, so there may even be photos in the newspaper ;)

I started off by printing some whistles, but once the kids figured out that you can make ?almost anything?, requests flooded in and a mini-football, mini-pig, mini-pikachu and mini-flower got printed as well.

Unfortunately the a couple of things went wrong with the 3D printer (I didn?t want to move it from the space, but my alternatives didn?t work out):
- The bracket for the z-axis stop switch broke (it was cracked, but moving the printer didn?t help) - I temporarily fixed it with some blue tack, but we?ll need to print a new bracket
- The orientation of the new Rumba board caused the USB cable connector to weaken, which halted prints every time the table got bumped - does anyone have a spare USB cable with mini-B connector?

Great news about the Fun Day, glad to see that there was lots of interest.

When in the space yesterday evening I swapped the cable on the printer 
for one in the makey makey kits, recalibrated the z axis with the bodged 
z endstop and replaced the kapton on the bed so I could get it working 
if your careful. Still need a new cable and the bracket reprinting but 
there is now less urgency about it.

Thanks Tim! At least now you know how/why the printer was in that state. After manning the stall for 7 hours I just didn?t have the energy to fix it.

There are several parts on that printer that are showing signs of
cracks, i think we should look at printing a set of replacements for
them in the near future, before something more critical snaps.

Blimey those lockers are small. I don't think my cases of components will
actually fit in that.

If anybody wants my locker they are welcome to it. With my bad back I
struggled even to put the padlock on it with it down next to the floor. So
it is unusable for me sorry. Rent is paid on it for a year so a free locker
for anybody who wants it for twelve months.

I'll wait until the next lot of lockers arrive and hopefully the next lot
are slightly bigger than matchbox size ;-)

Those lockers are approx 300mm wide which seems to be the only size
readily available.  they are the deeper 450mm type.  and the height will
depend on how much of a locker your willing to pay for.

a quick check with the supplier says :
the 1/4 lockers were ?30 each
a 1/3 locker would be ?35
a 1/2 locker would be ?50
a full locker would be ?85

If you know of a source of wider lockers do let me know.

there just isnt the budget right now to invest in lockers and hope to
get it back someday so we need to find enough people to fill a stack
before we can buy one of that size.

the depth was wonderful, all of that is moot as there is no way I can reach

Hopefully we can sort things out on monday, i'm sure one of the
younger/bendier chaps will be happy to swap with you, i think gerrit
said he would.

If it is too small for you then someone will buy it off you, i had been
thinking of having one myself, and i'm sure there are others. Although i
too would not be able to reach the bottom one.

I'll gladly go for a bigger one.... I love the depth on them and a middle
one would be perfect... the 'threes'? Getting down to the floor is just a
bit of a nightmare at the moment. I'm looking forward to possibly using the
space more once I have my stuff there

Robo Sapien can live in the floor one when he is finished... no need for
anybody to move if nobody wants to have mine. I was going to get a second
locker for him in case in case anybody wanted to take him out to
demonstrate, I don't particularly want him left out on display where
anybody could pick him up and walk away with him... he was going to be one
of my space projects, maybe a ESP8266 instead of an arduino... ;-)

The Arduino takeaway kits... I may do a 'swansea hackspace' Arduino
breakaway session at the Carmarthen Amateur Radio Society next year...

Are there many spare kits at the hackspace? Could I maybe buy ten? Or if
there is a 'list' of components I could order up the parts myself... are
you going to run another 'takeaway' course? Maybe we can jointly buy? I
could also offer to run it at the new Swansea & District Amateur Radio
Society as well if it goes well at Carmarthen.

There are currently no made up kits, they all sold at the time.

The TV had a failed light driver on the left half of the screen, it came back on for a few days so, it could just be a loose connection.

I've been playing with recycled laptop screens (minus the cracked lcd) and I can fit new lighting if needed.


No animals were harmed in the making of this email. However, several thousand electrons were severely inconvenienced.

When I'm down next I will look at the mounting situation... we might be
lucky, we might not... depends if the holes on the tv line up to the ones
on the plate. If not, I'll get a rail from B&Q
