so a 1W 405nm blue laser diode, looks to be about £20 or so for the
laser on its own.

aliexpress has similar engraver machines starting at £65 delivered.

it looks to be a similar construction to cheap 3d printers, but doesnt
need the z-axis movement or heated bed, so yeah, price is about right.

Of course not having any kind of an enclosure it is best not used in
the same room as anyone or anything you care about.
