I think this would be a great idea. While it may be somewhat more niche than other interests within the hackspace I think it would be good to have a dedicated space and perhaps monthly workshops on guitar setups and maintenance. I've neglected my guitars as of late and they could definitely use a freshen up. I have a bass that needs some work to the neck and the nut and if there was a space for it I think it would be a lot easier to do.

I would like to establish a guitar repair/maintenance section within the hackspace. I've been told that I should gauge interest among the membership by asking the mailing list, so, here we are.

What would the Axespace be:
A new section in the hackspace dedicated to guitar repair and maintenance, with the eventual goal of a dedicated monthly or every-other-weekly night event, in the vein of Crafternoon, Flight Club, and Microcontrolers Monthly. If there's any interest in it, I'd also be interested in using the Axespace to teach some luthiery classes.

What equipment would be needed:
Not much. the main addition to the space would be an electric guitar, on loan from myself to the space, and freely available for all members to strum to their heart's content, if they so fancy it. A small amplifier would also be added, but this would mainly be for testing electronics rather than playing. Some specialised tooling would be required, but this should be easy to make with the hackspace's tools and manufacture facilities. I can also loan some guitar cleaning equipment. At most, this will be a guitar and a drawer full of specialist tools.

What the Axespace would NOT be:
The Hackspace School of Rock. Or the Hackspace band practise space and recording studio. Or the Hackspace Concert Arena. The goal isn't to make as much noise as possible, but to expand the Hackspace's repertoire of skill and knowledge.

So now, it's up to the mailing list. If you think it's a good idea, and maybe would like to participate or offer any talents you have in this field, please reply and say so.

Conversely, if you think this might be the worst idea since Daisuke Inoue invented the Karaoke machine, please also say so. Mailing list participation is the point of this exercise.

Ta

Lightsaber Andy
