If we take a guesstimate of 20 permanent members, 20 x £5 x 12 months = £1200 per year. Even in a very severe depression that would not pay for a space, equipment, bills etc. As Paul already said, Bristol Hackspace charges a minimum of £10/month. Makerspace in Cambridge charges £40/month. They did have an interesting way to bootstrap the hackspace: "Founder Members paid £250 upfront before Makespace was open, in exchange for 6 months of membership including early access to the space and involvement in planning and building the space and community."
According to London Hackspace, they require an average of £20/month per member to survive. Makerspace Newcastle charges a minimum of £10/month, but encourages members who use the space more to pay more. Cardiff Hackspace also charges £20/month, and hopes to bring that down to £15/month once they have more members.
