Originally sold as an easy way to provide WiFi connectivity to microcontroller projects like an Arduino this small and cheap board has become very popular in its own right, because as well as being a useful connectivity device its onboard 32bit 80MHz cpu is reprogrammable so that it can be used as a microcontroller board in its own right.
